New Regions Coming To Alexa

Over the past week, Amazon has made a couple of big announcements. Today Amazon announced that the Amazon Echo is coming to the US. As they did when India became included Amazon will be automatically adding skills to the Canadian store and creating a language for the skill. This brings a further flavour of English to Alexa now (we already have the UK, US and Indian).

New Developer Alexa Skill

A new skill has appeared on the Alexa Skill Store aimed at skill developers. The new Dev Tips skill has the following description:

This skill answers questions about Alexa development, gives you the latest developer news, and even provides contact information for the Alexa Education team.

You can try things like:

"Alexa, ask Dev Tips about SSML."

"Alexa, ask Dev Tips about office hours."

"Alexa, ask Dev Tips how to use a database."

Arrival Of Premium Alexa Skills

Many have wondered and considered how you can earn money for creating Alexa Skills. In the past there have been attempts in some level of monetization such as advertising, however, these have been shut down due to Amazon's terms of service. Some skill developers have earnt rewards such as t-shirts and Echo Dot's. In August Amazon also announced an extension to their rewards program based on skill usage however overall the potential is fairly limited.

Earn Money With Your Skills

Recently Amazon removed the ability for Android app developers from earning money based on popularity and use.Previously app developers could release a free app that had no advertising and still earn money. The money earnt was based on usage of the app. The more it was used the more money that could be earned.

Well, that bad news for app developers has turned into good news for skill developers. Amazon has extended an incentive for skill developers. Previously skill developers could earn money if they posted a skill in 1 of the following categories:
