Recently Amazon removed the ability for Android app developers from earning money based on popularity and use.Previously app developers could release a free app that had no advertising and still earn money. The money earnt was based on usage of the app. The more it was used the more money that could be earned.
Well, that bad news for app developers has turned into good news for skill developers. Amazon has extended an incentive for skill developers. Previously skill developers could earn money if they posted a skill in 1 of the following categories:
- Games, Trivia and Accessories
Six further categories have now been added
- Education and Reference
- Food and Drink
- Health and Fitness
- Music and Audio
Amazon recently posted a blog post regarding this and gave some handy tips on increasing engagement, this is certainly worth taking a read. Amazon has also created a rewards page giving more details regarding the incentive.
Personally, I do not see a lot of traffic for my skills (they are fairly niche and I need to promote them more) but the ability to earn money for something we are already doing can only be a positive. Couple this with the fact that we can claim credits to pay for the fees incurred through AWS for creating skills the money earned should be closer to pure profit.
